Play Responsibly: Setting Limits Before You Start

The single most effective habit for keeping real-money gaming as entertainment, rather than a problem, is deciding your limits before you start playing — not while you’re mid-session.

Three Limits Worth Setting

  • A money limit. Decide the maximum you’re willing to deposit this week, treat it as already spent, and stop when it’s gone.
  • A time limit. Set an alarm for your session length. When it goes off, stop — regardless of how the session is going.
  • A loss limit. If you hit a losing streak, chasing it with bigger bets is the single most common path to real harm. Decide your stop-loss in advance and honor it.

Signs It’s Time to Take a Break

  • You’re playing longer or spending more than you planned, repeatedly
  • You’ve borrowed money to play or to cover a loss
  • You feel you need to keep it secret from people close to you
  • You feel anxious or irritable when you try to stop

If any of that sounds familiar, it’s worth stepping back and talking to someone. Free, confidential help is available — see our Responsible Gaming page for helplines and resources.

Gaming should stay fun. The limits above are the simplest way to keep it that way.
